Summer issue on its way to members

The Summer issue of California Waterfowl will soon be landing in members’ mailboxes. Not a member? Not a problem. Join now by clicking here, and you’ll be on the list to get future issues as long as you remain a member. Then email Editor Julie Do at jdo@calwaterfowl.org to get this issue mailed to you as well.

Here are some of the highlights of the Summer issue:

The perfect shooting practice (print issue only). Field and Stream shotgun field editor Phil Bourjaily dives into the kinds of habits and games to work on to help you refine your shooting.

The wonders of garage sale gear (print issue only). New duck hunting gear isn’t cheap, but buying new isn't always necessary. Outdoors writer M.D. Johnson offers advice on how to navigate garage sales to score deals on gear for the next hunting season.

Advocacy, presented by Federal Premium Ammunition. Vice President for Advocacy Mark Hennelly discusses the latest bill that would have put restrictions on dog training, and a petition that would ban waterfowl hunting on Benicia's navigable waters and shoreline areas adjacent to the city. Both were opposed by CWA. He also goes over the finalized waterfowl seasons and bag limits for 2022-23, and a CWA-sponsored bill that would keep over $1 million in waterfowl habitat funds for DFW and its Type A and B wildlife areas. Hunting with a mockingbird (print issue only). Writer Holly Heyser recounts her hunt in the Sacramento Valley with a guide who has some serious duckcalling skills. She also holds a Q&A with Benelli's senior product manager, George Thompson, to learn about Benelli Surface Treatment, a rust-proof and scratch-resistant gun coating.

By the Numbers (print issue only). What did hunter and harvest data look like during 2021-22? The extensive waterfowl season statistics graphic shows that harvest was down. But because hunter numbers were down more due to limited access, that meant averages were up.

Canine Corner, sponsored by SportDOG® Brand. Hunting season will be here before you know it. Brush up on marked-retrieve drills and get your pup ready for the marsh this fall by following Charlie Jurney's tips for reinforcing good marking habits.
