Summer Issue of California Waterfowl
The Summer issue of California Waterfowl will soon be landing in members’ mailboxes, and we’ve got some great stories for our readers! Here are some of the highlights:
The 2018-19 harvest numbers: You won’t be surprised to know harvest was down, and substantially so for geese. But there were a few bright spots. Check out all the details Editor Holly Heyser teased out of the harvest stats from state-run refuges with check stations. (Only in print issue.)
Lead-free dove hunting: Starting this year, your hunting ammo in California needs to be all lead-free, all the time. If you’re trying to figure out how that’ll work on doves (and quail, snipe and preserve birds), Phil Bourjaily’s got answers for you, and it’s 99% good news. (Only in print issue.)
Sharing paradise: Eighteen years ago, Paul and Sandi Bonderson started building a waterfowl paradise in the Upper Butte Basin, and when it was done, they did something really unusual with it: They started sharing it. A LOT. Read the story here.
Klamath's bone-dry wetland: The struggle to balance water needs in the Klamath region has led to severe reductions in deliveries to the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. What does that mean for the nearly 40% of all of California's mallards that rely on the Northeastern Zone for breeding and molting habitat? See how CWA is working to protect this valuable habitat here.
Funding for duck clubs: The passage of Proposition 68 has brought new funding to the Presley Program. Find out how this infusion of money can help private landowners improve waterfowl habitat. (Only in print issue.)
The duck-club mouse: It was thought that good waterfowl-hunting habitat in the Suisun Marsh was not so good for the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse. Recent research suggests otherwise. Learn more here.
Canine Corner: Our popular dog-training column, brought to you by our partners at SportDOG® Brand, is now available online! Click here to read what trainer Josh Miller has to say about how you can improve your dog during the summer heat.
Youth Hunt Scrapbook: Yup, we’ve got four pages of grinning kids from the 2019 Youth Hunt Weekend! (Only in print issue.)
Advocacy: From fighting to increase the pintail bag-limit to fighting against a bobcat hunting ban, CWA's advocacy team has been hard at work protecting hunters' interests. Keep up to date on our most recent work here.
Annual Report: Our 2019 Annual Report highlights good work that's been accomplished thanks to the support of members, donors and volunteers. Click here to download the PDF.
