San Jacinto Wildlife Area Project Summary
California Waterfowl undertook complete reconstruction during the summer of 2023 on the wetland unit at the entrance to the San Jacinto Wildlife Area. The site is part of the auto tour route, and the public will be treated to a more natural looking wetland complex that will have improved visibility of wildlife throughout the year. California Duck Stamp funding allowed for this 16.5 acre wetland construction to take place which as the unit matures will provide diversity and a mix of emergent cover and open water features that will increase brood survival and rearing success. Improvements started with the removal of a separating levee between two existing units to make one large unit and the complete refurbishment of the perimeter levees and slopes. The new swale system and water control structure will allow for the unit to be completely drained once brooding season is complete. The project was funded by state duck stamp purchasers and efforts by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and California Waterfowl staff will help to increase waterfowl production at this very popular southern California wildlife area.
