The Fall issue of California Waterfowl will soon be landing in members’ mailboxes, and we’ve got some great stories for our readers! Here are some of the highlights:

On the cover: For the first time in a long time a greenhead graces the cover of the magazine. CWA Associate Editor Wayne Tilcock found this drake out at the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge. Prefer the "other greenhead?" Check out the Table of Contents page that features a photo of a drake northern shoveler showing off his gorgeous breeding plumage.

What's up (or down) with California's mallards?: According to the breeding population survey, the recent years of wet winters haven't resulted in the jump in California's breeding population of mallards that would be expected. There may be problems beyond weather holding back our local mallards. Also check out our FAQ page on the population surveys.

From flood to brood pond: Andrew Bogan of the Teal Club in the Suisun Marsh tells how the heavy rains in the winter of 2016-17 left the entire property covered in water well into summer. But what was nearly a disaster turned out to be a lesson that should have been obvious, ducks love water.

Hunting partners: CWA's Hunt Program served more than 2,800 people last year. That level of success wouldn't be possible with partners who donate their time and open their properties to us. From the border of one of the Sacramento Valley's best refuges, to an island in the delta, and even down to the happiest place in SoCal, there are individuals, clubs and organizations helping CWA improve hunter access across the state.

Groundwater and wetlands: The new Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) could make life tough for duck clubs that rely on groundwater, especially in areas that have been critically overdrafted like the San Joaquin Valley and Tulare Basin. New pumping restrictions in those areas could mean big changes ahead.

Advocacy: Our legislative staff has been working hard at the Capitol to fight for waterfowl, wetlands and hunters. While there has been success in regards to funding for habitat there are still challenges to the science-based management of wildlife that need to be fought.
