COLLEGE CAMP AT BIRD HAVEN RANCH

College Camp offers students a comprehensive, hands-on experience to enhance their understanding of hunting and wildlife management. By participating, you'll gain insights into the motivations behind hunting and the respect hunters have for animals and their habitats. The camp emphasizes safety, conservation, and the role of organizations like California Waterfowl Association.

Key Highlights:

  • Safety and Skills Training: Receive comprehensive instruction on firearm safety, shotgun shooting, and archery.
  • Conservation Education: Gain knowledge about waterfowl ecology, bird identification, and wetland restoration.
  • Duck Hunt Experience: Enjoy a guided duck hunt at a private wetland on Sunday morning. Shooting is optional, with a primary focus on understanding the decision-making process and the motivations behind hunting practices.
  • Discover the Role of Hunters in Conservation: Explore how hunters contribute to conservation efforts.
  • Wildlife Management Insights: Learn about the roles and responsibilities of wildlife managers.
  • Waterfowl Identification: Develop skills in identifying various waterfowl species.
  • Rules and Regulations: Understand hunting regulations and best practices.
  • Field to Table: Experience the process of processing and cleaning harvested game.
  • Gear and Equipment: All necessary gear, including waders and jackets, will be provided.
  • Professional Engagement: Interact with wildlife managers and professionals to gain valuable insights into their roles and responsibilities.

Camp Dates and Enrollment:

  • Cal Poly Humboldt Camp: November 22nd - 24th
  • UC Davis Camp: January 3rd - 5th

Please select the appropriate college ticket when registering. These camps will have an application process, applying does not guarantee you a spot. Please keep an eye on your email since that will be how we communicate if we move forward in the process.

Additional Information:

  • Lodging and Meals: All accommodations and meals are included.
  • Gear Provision: All necessary gear will be provided.
  • License and Certification: Your hunting license and duck stamps will be issued provided you have completed the required Hunter’s Education Certification.  
  • Hunters Education: You will complete an online Hunter Education Course that will require a commitment of about 4-6 hours prior to camp starting, then you will complete a 4-hour follow up course along with the exam during the camp.
